Rules

NEW POINTS IN 2018:

  • Please note that your new contact (for ELIPSO and IK members) for this fourth edition is Maud Gallais, Franco-German trainee project manager at ELIPSO and IK.
  • You can now access the application file through a URL link in the application page. In order to validate your registration, you will be asked to complete this file in English (mandatory) and to upload your logo along with a photo in printable resolution of your innovation.
  • You will also be asked to fill out a detailed descriptive sheet for the Pre-Jury and Grand Jury. Even if English is mandatory, a translation into French and German is strongly recommended for the good understanding of the jury members.
  • New section in the application: the company must clearly describe the 3 key innovative elements of its product (max. 1,300 signs). This text will be used to present the pack in the 2018 Innovation Book. It must be in English and German (for IK members) or English and French (for ELIPSO members). The translation of this text into the third language is highly recommended to avoid any translation mistakes.
  • For all entrants, two samples of the submitted products are to be sent to ELIPSO :

  • Samples do not have to be sent for bulky products. They will be judged from photos in printable resolution, drawings, motion designs or videos that the company provides to the organisers.
  • For fresh food packaging, samples should contain a fake product or picture.
  • Whenever possible, the jury must be able to test the provided product in order to validate its innovative character. For example, if the innovation is a closure, it should be sent together with the container it is designed for. It is also important to send us two product samples.
  • Entrants may send in a short video (max. 2 minutes) to explain how their innovation works. If the video isn’t in English, the company must send a commentary text in English for the jury.

Article 1: Purpose

As part of the promotion of the plastic packaging industry, on March 1, 2018, ELIPSO (France) and IK (Germany) are launching “PackTheFuture” Sustainable Plastic Packaging 2018, a competition that they are organising. The award ceremony for the fourth PackTheFuture contest will take place at the ALL4PACK fair in Paris, France on Tuesday November 27, 2018.

The goals of this competition are to:

  • Showcase innovation and sustainable development in this area,
  • Promote the plastic and flexible packaging industry,
  • Foster contacts and projects among companies and partners.

The “PackTheFuture 2018” competition is managed by ELIPSO, 13 rue de La Fayette, 75009 Paris, France and IK, Kaiser-Friedrich-Promenade 43, 61348 Bad Homburg vor der Höhe, Germany.

Article 2: Entry terms and conditions

  • The companies submitting an entry must be plastic and/or flexible packaging manufacturers that are members of ELIPSO in France or IK in Germany, their European branches can also compete,
  • Entering companies may submit a pack that is designed and manufactured in a European country, hereafter referred to as “product”,
  • The submitted product must be innovative on its market. For that purpose, the product must be new to the market (launched not before January 2016 for the 2018 contest) or in the Research & Development phase.
  • Applicant companies may submit an innovation designed or made in cooperation with a tooling maker, machinery producers, packers, fillers and other co-operation partners, a raw material producer.

Article 3 / Categories and Awards

4 innovation categories.
Entrants may enter 1, 2, 3 or 4 categories with different products:

1. ECODESIGN CATEGORY (use of recycled material, recyclability, source reduction, weight reduction)
An environmentally-friendly innovation throughout the product’s lifecycle, through the choice of raw materials, its manufacture and its transport, its functionality, its end of life, etc.
For example, use of recycled material, recyclability, source reduction, while maintaining or improving the product’s functionality, etc.

2. PRODUCT PROTECTION CATEGORY
An innovation that improves protection of contents from filling/manufactory through to end user. Entrants should demonstrate in detail how their packaging reduces or avoids damage during transit or shelf display or enables the end user to store and use the product in a better way.
For example, extension of shelf-life, no or fewer preservatives, no or less damage on the content, user safety, etc.

3. SOCIAL BENEFIT CATEGORY
An innovation that meets the new consumption trends and habits of today’s users and customers, or the new consumption modes of target groups such as children, the elderly and families. It can also include a benefit to society.
For example, out-of-home mobile consumption, right dosage dispensing, easy or safe opening, etc.

4. SAVE FOOD CATEGORY
(This new category concerns food and agricultural packaging companies)
An innovation that is easy to empty, minimises food losses and food waste, extends shelf life and improves the supply of food. NB: applications should contain information about the reduction in food waste associated with the innovation.
For example, full product restitution (easy to empty), better facilitation or communication around portioning, expiry date extension and left over storage solutions.

3 winners will be selected in each of the categories described above, subject to a sufficient number of eligible entries being received and according to the jury’s decision.

Each ELIPSO or IK member company (legal entity in each country) may submit only one entry per category. For each packaging, entering companies need to complete one application form for the targeted category. Therefore only 4 application forms can be submitted by ELIPSO or IK member (legal entity).

Entry fees are €195 excluding tax for each application form. IK and Elipso members will receive an invoice once the application form is fully completed.

Entries will not be considered firm until payment of €195 excluding tax per application form has been received and cleared by ELIPSO or IK.

The jury reserves the right to move an entry from one category to another for the applicant’s benefit.

Article 4 / Entry process

To enter this competition, the entrant, an ELIPSO or IK member, must clearly fill in the entry form and strictly follow the instructions.

To take part, entrants must also meet the following criteria:

  • Fulfil the criteria indicated in article 1 of the present rules,
  • Certify that their company complies with packaging legislation and regulations in the European Union and the destination countries for the submitted packaging,
  • Fill in an entry form online at www.packthefuture.com,
  • The entry form must be completed in full for each submitted pack,
  • With each entry form, a clear visual of the innovation, in printable resolution (300 DPI), in colour and on a neutral background has to be supplied, as well as the logo of your company in printable definition (300 DPI) (which will be included in the award booklet 2018),
  • Entrants may send in a short video (max. 2 minutes) to explain how their innovation works. If the video isn’t in English, the company must send a commentary text in English for the jury,
  • Entry fees of €195 excluding tax per application form must be received, in accordance with the instructions provided in Article 3 of this document,
  • All entrants must send 2 samples of each product entered for the competition by May 4th, 2018 to:

Arrangements for sending products:

Article 5 / Entry deadline

Online registration will open in March 2018. Entry forms must be completed online at www.packthefuture.com by midnight on May 4th, 2018.

For all entrants, product samples must be sent by postal mail before May 4th, 2018 to :

Article 6 / Juries

  • A shortlist of entries will be drawn up by a pre-jury in June 2018. This pre-jury will be made up of technical experts and packaging specialists,
  • The grand jury will meet in late June 2018, comprised of NGO representatives, journalists, scientists, professors, designers and packaging experts, in order to assess the entries from a professional, technical and consumer/user benefit viewpoint. If a member of the jury happens to have been involved, whether closely or remotely, in the development of one of the submitted innovations, they may not take part in the debates or the final vote for the category concerned by the innovation.
    The jury’s debates shall remain confidential and its members shall sign a pledge to that effect.
    The jury’s decisions are final and do not have to be justified.

Article 7 / Appraisal criteria

The jury will select the award-winning innovations according to the following criteria:

  • The innovative nature of the packaging,
  • Functionality and ergonomics,
  • Environmental benefit.

Article 8 / Ownership of innovations and entrants’ responsibilities

By submitting a product in 1, 2, 3 or 4 categories, entrants declare that they have all the rights, particularly intellectual property rights (patents, trademarks, designs and models) to the products submitted for the competition.
If the entrants do not have these rights, they declare that the holder of the rights, whose contact details must be provided, approved their participation and agrees to the following rules. Under no circumstances may the organisers be held liable for lawsuits relating to the protection of Intellectual Property. The entrant guarantees the organisers and the manager of the competition against any claims by the holders of any intellectual property rights whatsoever.
The entrant alone shall see to any lawsuits or disputes that may arise concerning their entry, their project or its production. They shall compensate the organisers for any harm they may incur and guarantee them against any nuisance, claim or action whatsoever in that respect.

Submission of entries entails an explicit authorisation given to the competition’s organisers and manager to make any advertising its sees fit in relation to the awards given out under the competition “PackTheFuture” Sustainable Plastic Packaging Award 2018.

Entrants grant the competition’s organisers and manager the right to use the images and text presenting the award-winning innovation for any purposes of information and promotion in any medium whatsoever in France, Germany and other countries.

Article 9 / Prizes

The Prizes in each category are comprised of a Trophy, a certificate and the right to use the “Pack the Future” label stating the year of the award.
All entrants will be featured in the 2018 Innovation Book.

Article 10 / Use of label

The “PackTheFuture” Sustainable Plastic Packaging Award 2018 trademark belongs jointly to IK and ELIPSO.
Use of the “PackTheFuture, Sustainable Plastic Packaging Award” label: award winners may use the trademark and the logo of the award won in their commercial and advertising material; the year of winning the Award must be stated.

Article 11 / Awards ceremony

IK and ELIPSO will manage the Award Ceremony at the ALL4PACK fair in Paris, France in November 27, 2018. The venue and date may be changed if needed with no compensation owed to candidates as a result.

Article 12: Information consultation and correction rights

The personal information transmitted with respect to the Competition will go through data processing. Entrants have the right to consult, correct and delete information concerning them by writing to:

Article 13: Deposit of “PacktheFuture” competition rules

The present competition rules are deposited with the firm:

The present rules can be consulted and downloaded from the website www.packthefuture.com and sent free of charge to anyone on request to the organisers and manager.

Entering the Competition entails full acceptance of all of the clauses herein.

Article 14: Acceptance of the present rules

Entering this Competition entails the full acceptance of the present rules, which are governed by French law for ELIPSO members and German law for IK members and contractually binds the organisers and the entrant.
In the event of force majeure, the organisers reserve the right to shorten, change, extend or cancel the present Competition without notice, in whole or part. They shall not be liable as a result and the entrants may not claim any damages.

These changes may however be notified beforehand by any appropriate means, particularly via the Competition website.

The organisers reserve the right to temporarily suspend participation in the Competition if the continuity of the service needed for it to go ahead cannot be guaranteed.
Additions or, in the event of force majeure, changes to these rules may be made during the Competition. They will be considered as appendices hereto and deposited with the firm acting as custodian hereof.
The date of the Jury’s selection of the Finalists or the date of the Final may be put back. The organisers reserve the right, in particular, to suspend or extend the duration of the Competition in the event of force majeure, particularly in the event that the jury considers that no entries are satisfactory.

Furthermore, the organisers shall not be liable for any events that are not of their doing or in the event of force majeure likely to disrupt, change or cancel the Competition.

Any company entering the Competition certifies that it meets the conditions set down herein for taking part.

The organisers, ELIPSO and IK, reserve the right to use any legal means, particularly bringing a suit, against anyone who may have cheated, deceived, faked or disrupted the operations described herein, or attempted to do so.

Any dispute or claim with respect to the Competition may not be received unless it is sent before 03/12/2018 (as proven by the postmark with acknowledgment). It must be made by standard letter sent to the Organisers. Such letter shall state the exact date of entering the Competition, the full contact details of the entrant and the precise grounds for the dispute. No other method of dispute or claim shall be taken into account.
In the event of lasting disagreement over the application or interpretation hereof, and failing an amicable agreement within 30 days, the entrant may refer the matter to the competent tribunal for the domicile of IK for German entrants and for that of ELIPSO for French entrants.
